MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Loyal Smith

Loyal retired at the end of March 2025.  Originally from Indiana, he moved to Missouri in the mid-70's.  Spent a few years in Springfield then rolled up I-44 to St. Louis in 1986.  He's enjoy traveling by car and hiking in State Parks.  His wife, Mary Ellen, and he have 3 boys.  All married and there are 2 grandkids and one more due in June this year.

His first Jag love was the XJ-S and it had to be a convertible. This was probably around 1990.  He thinks the idea of a V12 was the bait.  As a 20-something, bigger was always better when it came to engines!  But, he never got one and time/life moved on.

He really didn't notice or pay much attention to any Jaguars after that since he was living the dream with economy cars or big pickups or mid-size sedans.  Then he saw an F-Type about 4 years ago.  Honestly, he had not noticed them before that.  So he pursued finding out about it.  As he was thinking about retiring and what he wanted to do, he kept picturing myself in a cool classic or a somewhat higher performance car.  He would have done the F-Type, but my experience with 2-seaters told me that the passenger does not deserve to have to sit there and hold my stuff since there is no internal storage.  Girlfriends maybe but not my wife! (all his other two-seaters were in his single days).

Of course he was drawn towards the SVR.  The F-Pace SVR was his first Jag. A 2020 model that was Jaguar Certified.  He picked it up in June 2023.  It had back seats and storage!  Wife approved!!  When he decided when he was going to retire, he started thinking about what to do with my commuter car.  I found the XK started getting his attention.  So he found a nice example in the 2013 drop-top that he picked up in Fall '24.

 Welcome Loyal!

 Passing of Bob Tullius

Remembering Bob Tullius: The Visionary Founder of Group 44 and Racing Legend

The motorsports world is mourning the loss of a true pioneer. Robert Charles “Bob” Tullius, legendary driver and founder of Group 44 Inc., has passed away at 95, leaving a legacy of professionalism that transformed American sports car racing into a brand-driven business. Throughout his career, Tullius secured over 300 victories and 14 SCCA National Championships, defining an era with his meticulously prepared, white-and-green liveried cars that partnered with manufacturers like Jaguar and Triumph.

Tullius was more than just a successful racer; he was the architect of modern professional sports car racing in America. Through his team, Group 44, he transformed the sport from a “rich man’s hobby” into a sophisticated, brand-driven business.

Founded in 1965, Group 44 Inc. brought unprecedented levels of preparation and presentation to the sport, driven by a pioneering partnership with Quaker State. Tullius revolutionized racing by treating it as a professional marketing tool, fostering deep ties with brands like Jaguar, Triumph, MG, and Audi, proving that racing could be a powerful marketing tool for automotive brands.
